Asbestos was known to be very versatile and was used in numerous building materials, such as, roofing, walls, insulation the shipping industry and the list goes on.  Today there are still remains of mineral fiber in buildings and other structures and a high occupational health and safety risk is in place.  Workers who are exposed to these environments, where asbestos is found are to wear particular full body suits, facial and breathing masks also.  The effect the disease has on ones life and family is life changing as the result is either Asbestosis or Mesothelioma.  ‘Asbestosis’ is scarring on the lung or ‘mesothelioma’ is cancer of the lung lining. 

The signs of Mesothelioma can be anywhere from 10 years after exposure to 60 years.  Mesothelioma can be terminal depending on the stage where it is diagnosed.  As you can see this is a large timeline and if you have worked in any industry where you may have been exposed to asbestos you should be tested. 

There are other forms of cancer and illness’ that asbestos can cause which vary.  As discussed above the most common illness is Asbestosis and Mesothelioma.  There are treatments to fight these illness’ which are chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.
